Early this morning, US President Donald Trump tweeted, suggesting that he would reschedule the 2020 election, citing fraud with mail-in voting.
Many Senate Republicans disputed this claim made by the President, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senators Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, Chuck Grassley, among many others.
Legally, a President cannot delay or cancel a national election. It is determined by Congress when an election is held, and only Congress can change an election's date. Since 1845, it has been custom measure that the election is held on the first Tuesday in November. Additionally, it is unlikely that such a resolution to change the date of the election would pass through Congress, seeing that Democrats control the House, and Republicans control the Senate.
