As we all know, this year is the beginning of a new school – a brand new community. This community is not made up from scratch but rather a mixture of two that have made their mark in this world. The establishment of Saint Paul means we get to look forward to the prospect of new opportunities and traditions, while still keeping up with old ones. For years, the alumni of both schools have been coming together and staying in touch – so we wanted to know how they were going to merge into one community. Who better to ask than the two ladies who are at the head of the alumni table? We reached out to Ms. Rosemary Scott and Mrs. Christine Seger, two very hardworking ladies, and asked what they had in the works to bring the two groups together, and if they could share some of what they’re already doing with us.
Ms. Scott said: "I am continuing to do alumni work for St. Peter's, Marian and St. Peter-Marian. I am working on a Newsletter for these schools and we have a dedicated alumni Facebook page (St. Peter's CCHS Alumni) where many alumnus post pictures, etc. We are hoping to do some virtual reunions in the future.” And concerning the specific Saint Paul alumnus, Scott says “I will be working with Christine Seger. She is responsible for the Holy Name family and will be doing similar things for her group. We have started a Facebook page - Saint Paul Knights Alumni. This site is for any alumnus from our legacy schools, as well as future Saint Paul alumni. We have been posting Alumni Spotlights - every couple of weeks, we post a Spotlight on a former St. Peter's, Marian, St. Peter-Marian (SPM), or Holy Name (HN) alumnus. We will be working on an archive room located next to the Chapel which will house old yearbooks, photos, etc. Our goal is to invite alumni, when safe to do so, to come and visit.”
Mrs. Seger replied: “Here in the alumni office, there are many things happening.” I don’t know about you guys, but that sounds exciting! Mrs. Seger continues to say, “I am not working alone. I am working alongside Rosemary Scott. We are Both Alumni of the schools we represent. I am a member of the HN Class of '84, while Rosemary is SPM class of '82, and together we are Saint Paul.”
Concerning the alumni from each of the schools, she says that “we work on keeping the line of communication open with our alums, helping them stay connected.” She continues to explain that they have been doing this “through newsletters, and social media. Just like we have “Students of the Week" here at Saint Paul, we do a monthly alumni spotlight that not only highlights an alum and their accomplishments, but then ties them back to us through the Saint Paul Website showing everyone that we are one community.”
In terms of the Saint Paul Alumni Facebook Group, "It would be wonderful if more of our current Saint Paul students were on the page to help tie these communities together. Remember HN and SPM have had many families that have attended both schools. Whether it was parents, siblings, cousins, one may have gone SPM while the other went to HN. So, our alumni and current community has been connected for decades. And now, rather than being across the city from one another we are all under one roof.”
Mrs. Seger goes on to tell us that the “purpose of the Saint Paul Knights Alumni Group is to promote community by sharing memories, building lifelong relationships, and staying connected to your "Fellow Knights" By being a member of this group you will have the benefit of being a part of our "Legacy School" network with alums from Holy Name and St. Peter Marian.” The Alumni group gives us all the opportunity to: learn about both in school and alumni related events and reunions, hear and share life events with our fellow classmates/alums, connect with friends both old and new, network with other working professionals, seek or give advice on college choices/experiences.
“We do have some ideas for different ways to get our communities together as one. The unfortunate truth is that COVID is really slowing down that process. Doing any kind of event at this time is just not possible. But we are working on trying to do something special hopefully in the spring. You will have to stay tuned.”
And for this last part, which I think is something that we all need to hear: “It is very important for everyone to know that their school - be it HN or SPM - is not gone and will never be forgotten - that Saint Paul is made up of 4 beautiful legacy schools that all share the same ideals and standards. Here in the alumni office, we will do our best to preserve history, and carry-on traditions, but at the same time we will build our identity and traditions fit for Saint Paul. We are a new generation with so much to offer. Our possibilities are endless.”
