Dozens of MLB players and staff members have opted out of the season or have tested positive for COVID-19, after letting teams back to playing earlier this summer.
Teams such as the Miami Marlins, Saint Lewis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Washington Nationals have reported positive COVID-19 cases. Additionally, 11 MLB umpires and 20 players have opted out of the 2020 season, citing COVID-19 concerns.
After playing the Marlins opening weekend, the Phillies have not stepped on the diamond since, as a precaution. Additionally, many games through Sunday have been cancelled.
This trend of events put into question the future of this year's MLB season, as well as many other contact-heavy professional sports, such as football, soccer, and basketball.
